Ha! A Highland Dance competition may be many things, but until someone invents a volume control for bagpipes, quiet it can never be. I shall take with me Hugh MacDiarmid, "Scottish Eccentrics," a recent "find." Having read this week's New Yorker piece on Galton--who knew he invented underwater reading glasses; what does one read underwater, the literary equivalent of water music?--I have in my head some weak play of words, an epigram in defence of eccentricity, something about meanness possibly being inherent in regressing towards the mean, but I can't quite pull it off. I look forward to seeing what poetry your weekend in Geary's company inspires. I guarantee that he's not expecting you.
