Lawrence: As to being human there may be some doubt . . .

___

Vampire’s Villanelle

Walking in darkness is a welcome relief: What’s held in darkness is harder to steal. The cover of daylight hides many a thief.

What’s stored in the daylight is lost to belief;
A heart is betrayed by the hope it would seal.
Walking in darkness is a welcome relief.

So many dark losses but yours is the chief.
Diamonds may glitter but which one is real?
The cover of darkness hides many a thief.

Glow worms sleep shadowed under a leaf.
Daylight denies what darkness can feel.
Walking in darkness is a welcome relief.

The sea stows its treasures under the reef.
Stars wait behind the sun’s blinding wheel.
The cover of daylight hides many a thief.

There’s no place in daytime for the darkness of grief.
The sun cannot light what the moon would conceal.
Walking in darkness is a welcome relief.
The cover of daylight hides many a thief.
