It's like the Jackson tale about the color-researcher who was raised in a 
colorless environment. Perhaps it should be "if we are speaking about the 
abstract nature of sound..."?

Confusing. Are we speaking of physicists without ears? There is something 
awfully /sad/ about a scientist of sound who never has heard the sounds s/he 
studies.
