Lit ideas is the stepchild of Philosophy and Literature (Phil Lit). When I
joined it, it seemed to be running happily, although from time to time
there were skirmishes among its members. Phil Lit was what I, and many of
the others here signed up for. It died in a cloud of acrimony and
resentment.
The list was managed by David Meyer, of happy memory. He was bright—but
quick to anger.
I seem to remember him and Lawrence being at odds over many things. They
hardly ever argued about whether red wine should be allowed to breathe for
some time before it was drunk; it was mostly about the Coming World Crisis.
Larry Kramer, yes, I'm not sure exactly why he left Phil Lit; I didn't know
he'd ever been a member of Lit Ideas.
After Phil Lit disappeared there was a time of great confusion. I never
took notes on it, but I think I could write a comic opera about it.
Right now, I'm tired. I haven't said a thing about the person who really
began everything. Dennis? Denis? Dutton. He was from Australia. And now
he's dead.
I'll think about some of this tomorrow.
