I don't know how the US does this, what the UK does is give people a little book with the answers to the questions (though not, presumably, in Q and A format), quite some while before The Test. > there are also tricky philosophical questions thrown in, "What is the Purpose of a Pay Slip"? About 18 months ago I was given what is apparently the gold standard IQ test, based, apparently, on a US test. It was somewhat culturally biased i.e. required general knowledge that was somewhat culturally-specific. I did OK on that kind of question but nearly flunked 'Why should/do we pay taxes?'. (Libertarians among you will be glad to know I lodged a protest on your behalf... .) I finally got The Answer after much prompting (no I won't tell you what it is!). (My precise result never mattered, even an imprecise one, didn't matter, as the tests were actually about something other than measuring my IQ. But things like this are perturbing even to people who don't really believe in IQ tests, IMO.
