IF ONLY THE POOR WOULD DIE
WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD IT WOULD BE
In the thrift store,
from the next aisle over
a young woman's voice
furious :
"Damn it!
god damn it,
I knew it'd be gone.
I knew it."
"Ain't that the way." her friend agreed,
"Ain't that just the way."
Yes, it is! I wanted to shout.
I still can't figure out
why the poor are so surprised
when they get flat tires in two's.
It ain't the goddamn Blues,
got a hold on you,
it's the curse of the universe.
It's the way things work,
bald tires pop,
no forward in reverse.
Best you just kill yourself now,
save Bush having to.
