at dinner last night, after i took a bunch of photos with a digital camera,
we talked about
digital cameras and the web. it's easy with many digital cameras to take
video and then
upload that to the web or send it by email. that is what the Iraqi have done
with the
beheading videos. this is also why the abu Ghraib photos became available.

the beheading was a highly ritualized and formal public act: first an
exceedingly long
justification was read aloud, which explained their actions, and then the
beheading was
done, in the manner that animals are sacrificed. beheading is a standard
punishment in the
Middle East and often carried out. the acts are videoed to be shown to the
global public.
the acts aren't irrational violence, if anything, it's the opposite. this is
ceremonial
public theater.

in contrast, the abu Ghraib photos are private, to be seen by insiders (the
US military) but
not the general public (the US military in fact has prevented the release of
the photos).
the acts are done without justifications, explanations, or any statements at
all. there are
some 1,500 photos on several CDs, but less than 50 have been made public. the
secret ones
have more violent images. the photos are typical trophy photos, familiar to
hunters, with
the victims stacked like captured animals. many of the photos also come from
the genre of
sadism: victims handcuffed or dog-chained into vulnerable, humiliating
positions. the photos
were taken by the US military to be shared among themselves and were widely
distributed via
internal military websites. when the photos became public, the US military
and the White
House became deeply embarassed and publicly distanced themselves from their
own actions. the
abu Ghraib photos are evidence of an irrational, sexual undercurrent to the
White House's
adventure in Iraq, and considering how the White House covered it up, it is
something that
is central to their actions in Iraq (in other words, if they truely rejected
it, they would
have punished and removed everyone involved in the actions, incl. the
generals and Rumsfeld.
that these officers continue in their roles indicates acceptance or approval.)

the two sets of images are very different from each other on all points. one
is a public
legal-religious ceremony, the other is a hidden sexual act of power and
subjugation.
