<Bought? Or held? (If bought, bought as part of a pension plan?) My 'bought
stock' refers to as it were wanton and wild --as Paul might have it --
buying stock in a way that entails 'living beyond one's means'.>

Bought as part of an over all pension plan by individuals and couples for purposes of retirement and for college education for their children. It was only by living well below their income that they could do this. For some, it was also for aged parents if needed as many older people had no pension at all. This was in addition to pension plans at one's place of employment.

How many 'reg'lar folk' bought stock?

Forty percent of the US population according to one economist I heard on one of the news shows.
