Chapter One. In the Orchard.

Tommy shoots a blue jay with his twenty-two and feels remorse. Julia comforts him by laying her hand on his arm. They both smile. Andrew picks up the bird and carries it to the edge of the orchard and buries it under a rock. Julia weeps. Tommy wonders why there should be sadness in the world. He fires his gun at one of the trees. Andrew takes the gun from him and buries it beside the dead jay. Julia covers the tree's wound with moss. Tommy faints from remorse and lies on the rough earth. Andrew kisses Julia. She thinks of Scotland.

Chapter Two. A Misunderstanding.
