Greetings!
I, too, am on FB but many of my friends and I have experienced parallel
experiences on it as mentioned already. Several of us discuss leaving/not
leaving.
One set of my closest friends used both email and GroupMe. We don't really
communicate much on FB. Another set - it's all email and we have a public group
on FB but we don't do much there except post events we are interested in Or
every now and then articles of interest.
Another set has many of us connected individually on FB and we also have two
similar (but with nuanced differences) closed groups. Plus we are on a List
such as this and have been on it for 20-25+ years (before Listservs, there were
bulletin boards). We have subsets of that Listserv if topics branch out (we
used to have what we called an X-Treme list where we would take heated flame
wars, but with the advent of FB we don't have a need to that any longer.) We
are also connected in person, many of us hosting gatherings, visiting each
other, and traveling (in some cases) overseas to visit. One took in my son,
site unseen, one year as he was in England and his Winter break plans fell
apart. I posted my concern and wishing two minutes, he had a place in Germany
to use as his base while he explored Europe. (And since, they came here and I
went there--)
We have found that the Listserv serves a function that even the closed FB
groups do not serve. (There are also many who are, no doubt rightly, a bit
leery of posting on FB--for all sorts of reasons). We are able to go more in
depth in writing an email for a distribution list than a FB post.
Whether on FB or in this List, it might help to have some people who are
"discussion leaders" or "book discussion group leaders" or others who will
consider posting on various topics.
For example, it will soon be [in the U.S.] National Poetry Month--perhaps we
could each post a poem that has meaning of some sort?
Or we could pick one of the authors that John mentioned - maybe divide it up
and have a few discussion leaders post thoughts and open the list for
discussion on it?
FB seems (to me) similar for the outside discussions with friends in my regular
life--sometimes just chatting with a neighbor while getting the mail, or maybe
taking a walk, or just visiting casually if we get home at the same time before
heading into our homes. Posts on my favorite Lists (this List is on that list),
are like when I have a friend over for coffee and cake or a cup of tea - or
it's even been similar (at times) to when my local Bookgroup meets, which it
does monthly at various members homes-and though some of us may also go listen
to a talk, go to a museum, go for a walk, etc., those are extras--
Anyway, I'd be okay on a FB page because I do have a little routine of looking
at it but actually prefer that we do please post here. Some items lend
themselves to a List forum.
On the other hand, if the thinking is to have this List grow, a group could be
started on FB--and if more lengthy discussions are desired in a topic, perhaps
they could then be taken "on-List" -- I do like the thought that it IS easier
to moderate. I prefer civility (I don't mind heated, but request civility in
the midst of it. My experience on the X-Treme List says to me that it IS
possible.
Those chicken stories! The poetry! The posts various ones write every now and
then! Thank you for them!
I miss hearing about how people's lives intersect with what they read and think
about, what their underlining perspectives are, and what Grand Thinkers have
influenced them. I'd really like to know what people are thinking about, what
they hear from their other groups/lists--
Maybe all those would be ok on FB. Except--I'd like to see the Chickens in a
book someday (I have a lot of friends with chickens!) and FB is weird about who
owns what content whether written or posted or photos or...that part of FB
troubles me quite a bit (read their fine print)
I also am aware that the latest trend does seem to be going *back* to people
opting in to emails whereby they get collections of information sent to them. I
find that trend intriguing.
Oh, I just wanted to pop in and tell all of you that I'm still here.
(Hi, Julie!)
Also, thank you, John, for adding to my reading list!
And I'm glad a few favorites are still here. I miss Mike.
Best regards,
Marlena
