Well, this is a nice case for historical (or 'istorical, as Geary writes,  -- 
"since we don't pronounce the haitch") analysis. Since 'broad' is the  
opposite of 'narrow', and 'a-broad' (literally, 'all-broad', metathetical for  
'all-a-board' (+>a ship going somewhere) only recently has become synonymous  
with 
'not in the United States'.
