Regardless of the history from almost 60 years ago, who on this list thinks that ANY resolution is possible if there is not a "two-state" solution? Eventually, there will be a state of Israel, and eventually, there will be a Palestinian state.

If that's the goal that must exist for any future for anybody in the region, how do we get closer? What steps should each side take?

Hi John -

Both you and Carol have made the point -- a good one -- that we've become too preoccupied with the past instead of discussing how to resolve this. Certainly a two-state solution is the only way to go. How we get there -- at this point -- is a painfully difficult problem to solve. But "there" is where we must go.

Looking back over the past few days and our "war" on lit-ideas, it's true we've been arguing more about the distant past than discussing what can be done to resolve this. How do we begin to make this a fruitful discussion?

this rather conservative estimate, around 250 000
Palestinians became refugees by June 1948:
