Further reply to Lawrence -- this is part of a reply to Carol but also relates, I think, to a post of Julie's. I've put the relevant part in block capitals > ck: Yes. And if people need treatment, they get it. Here, doctors won't see > you unless you have health insurance or pay in advance. Seriously JE>Yes. The case that stands out -- as a major difference between our systems -- is your friend's. (I'm sorry to hear about her.) Here she'd have had an NHS primary care doctor she could see (or, she could see a doctor in that practice), who'd refer her to a specialist but also see her regularly if necessary. The doctor would be within her neighbourhood (mine, the doctor of my choice, is about five minutes' walk away). She'd have had no need to worry about the cost/s of primary care appointments, hospital appointments, medicine, oxygen.... (the last 2 would be either free or minimal-cost). CANCER, THE CASE IS LESS CLEAR -- EXCEPT THAT NO-ONE WOULD DELAY FOR FEAR OF COST -- AS THE NHS CAN'T FUND ALL NEW DRUGS...CUT... . Still, people here will go to their GP fast, about it. ------------------------------------------------------------------ To change your Lit-Ideas settings (subscribe/unsub, vacation on/off, digest on/off), visit www.andreas.com/faq-lit-ideas.html
