If something is engaged in intelligible discourse it belongs to one sex or the other (to put it way too simply). These atoms are engaged in intelligible discourse and so must be gendered accordingly.

Not really. I've had intelligent conversations in San Francisco with people of unidentifiable genders.
RP: Right. That's why I put in the parenthetical qualification. The Kinsey Committee might have to decide in tough cases.
