Yes I know; use of that phrase - forever linked in my mind to demonstrations at
the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago - betrays my age ...
Even a died-in-the-wool leftist like me can't help but wonder how the Democrats
are going to persuade voters that their candidate could effectively run the
country when they couldn't even conduct a comparatively simple count of votes
at the caucus in Iowa.
This morning's lead headline on the website of DER SPIEGEL (Germany's largest
newsmagazine):
"Democrats disgrace themselves with election chaos" [Demokraten blamieren sich
mit Wahlchaos]
And the lead headline on the website of THE [Manchester] GUARDIAN's
International Edition:
"Democratic race starts disastrously as 'inconsistencies' delay Iowa results
Hours after voting began there were no results as the state’s Democratic party
said it was performing 'quality control'.
Some quality. No doubt the rumour mills are already churning ...
The whole world IS watching - with a very critical eye. Here's the headline of
a commentary from yesterday's SPIEGEL:
"Like Trump, just from the left - A comment by René Pfister:
"Many Europeans believe that everything would be better with the left-wing US
Democrats Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren in the White House. They are
mistaken."
[Wie Trump, bloß von links -Ein Kommentar von René Pfister: Viele Europäer
glauben, mit den linken US-Demokraten Bernie Sanders oder Elizabeth Warren im
Weißen Haus würde alles besser. Sie irren sich.]
Here in Germany, any smugness on the faces of 'left-liberal' social democrats
is quickly wiped away by recent news of former Social Democratic Party leader
Sigmar Gabriel joining the board of directors of Deutsche Bank, coupled with
this item that appears today on the NEW YORK TIMES website:
"The Money Behind Trump’s Money: The inside story of the president and Deutsche
Bank, his lender of last resort."
