Dear all,

One of the joys of revisiting paths of yore is to discover treasures
that were there all along, but which went unnoticed on first treading.

The term "path" should here be rendered metaphorically in the mind of
readers. We have specific artworks in our mind, which is to say
cinematographic expressions, henceforth referred to as _films_ (or
film, rather, as it is one specific film we'd want to reference).

Jim Jarmuch's Stranger than Paradise isn't unusual merely in that in
teaches Eve and, by implication, the un-American viewer how to
understand and consume a TV-dinner, but also in that it refutes
previous presuppositions of diasporic positioning. While we may have
tended to think of the diaspora as an enclave wedged within a majority
culture, Stranger than Paradise reminds (us) that the diasporic entity
is always something impermanent and transient, as if the diasporic
character can find itself only in a transitional state, always
awaiting return or disjunction, indicating a finality where the
diasporic state is terminated and abandoned as impossible.

The transient beings of Stranger than Paradise return to their
homeland; however, their guest returns to the new world; whether she
stays there (or not) we do not know. What seems clear is that where
she arrives, her precursors have vanished. What is she to make of her
new world?

Mvh. / Yours sincerely,
Torgeir Fjeld
