My grandfather, who was fifteen when the Wright Brothers took off and lived to see the Moon Walk, opined that church was intended to keep the women busy so men could have some peace, to teach children how to behave, and to calm down old people who were afraid of death. (He was an atheist and died with great dignity.)
My opinion is that church serves as a venue for authorizing public expressions of deep emotion. It's also a community meeting place, and they are scarce in the US.
It would be interesting to understand why those in other countries consider themselves nonreligious. The mystery of being is staring at us every day.
