Hotels/motels are indeed challenging, with bedbugs being a reality. That
infestation is very real, btw. I knew a woman in Fresno whose apartment
complex was riddled with the critters. She spent two months de-bugging her
place, again and again. Wound up tossing out her bed/box springs, sofa,
armchair--the works. Problem is, these bugs attach themselves to upholstered
furniture in factories, so the best bet is a foam bed and a leather sofa and
chair--which may be why these items are so popular lately.

Back to the hotel issue, however. It's rotten to de-bug one's own
environment only to spend one night in a hotel and bring home a host of
critters--or worse, be a host for critters. So what's new in hotel-wear
lately? The sleeping bag, with disposable, paper linings and matching zipped
pillows. Do not sit on any upholstery. Ever.

Which brings us to theaters. Do not sit while watching a movie. Cushy is
out. Folding wood and metal chairs are in.

How about riding in someone else's car? Make sure you're wearing a coat.
Then have it cleaned right after the ride. The nicest people carry bedbugs.

What about wearing delicate fabrics that can't be washed at near-boil
temperatures, you ask? Forget about them. Wear white. Wash and wash again,
if you happen to find yourself near anything resembling upholstery. Everyone
should wear white, live in severely decorated monasteries, and be ready to
wash, head to toe, at a moment's notice.

for the non-OCD rest of us
