We wonder what to write on an envelope containing a letter to Plato. What
would be Plato's last name?
We could guess that the Greeks followed the custom known from elsewhere
whereby the child would be refered to by the first name of the father,
followed by a stock suffix (daughter/son), such that Plato, in the case he
were Socrates' son, would be known as Plato Socrateson. However, there are
other traditions. In some rural settlements, last names were reserved for
the few. Rather, when there were two persons with the same given name in a
community, they would be distinguished by their place of domicile, such
that Plato might be know as Plato of Akropolis, or some such (in
distinction from, say, Plato of Sparta, who might have had an entirely
different outlook on things).
And what would be the postage for a simple letter to Hellenic Athens?
