It's one regarding criteria. We disagree on what makes a discussion, problem, or issue a "philosophical" one. This is a conceptual disagreement regarding criteria. Questions regarding standards only arise after the matter of criteria has been settled. I apply the same criteria of assessment to my undergrad students' papers as I do in my reviews of submissions to academic journals. But the standards at which I apply those same criteria differ. > > "'Plato played by Walter O"?? Are we on the same planet?" > > I'm not a philosopher as you, no doubt, have guessed. WO: Well you keep saying that but you typically wade in on the philosophical claims and problems that are presented in our cafe. You have little training in the discipline but you remain " a philosopher" in the sense that you find yourself compelled to reply to the things being said by others on philosophical matters. But I associate > "transcendental" as the position that there is such a thing as "truth" > and that it is independent of our experiences or ideas, but is "eventually" > accessible through logical reasoning. WO: Truth cannot be independent of our ideas or experiences. Reality, in itself, is so independent. Instead of thinking of truth as that to which our statements correspond, think of truth as what our statements express when they do correspond to reality. > > My understanding of transcendental may well be faulty, my belief that Plato > was primarily a transcendentalist could very well be in error, my > understanding of your philosophical comments might be amiss. But even the strictest reasoning is, I believe, a game. WO: Well yes, if you're going to compare me with Aristotle for god's sake, I'll turn out to be an arch Platonist. Aristotle's ethics is communitarian and empiricist, so if I had to sleep with one of them, I'd go with Plato of course. But while that is true, accuracy is lost. Plato was a metaphysical realist, I a humble transcendental constructivist. > > Didn't mean to offend.
