The Royal Yacht Britannia was decommisioned and opened to the public in 2012.
It’s currently berthed in Leith, where my grandmother used to live. The Daily
Telegraph reports that moves are afoot to return her to duty. My favorite
lines from that article are: "It wasn’t a play thing for the Royals, far from
it. It was an operational vehicle.”
When my wife again asks why I keep the Alfa I can now explain, “It’s not a play
thing; it’s an [occasionally] operational vehicle.” No doubt she’ll understand
the two categories to be mutually exclusive.
