Strictly, Palma while he speaks a descendant of Latin, is aware that
"idiot" was NOT a term of disrespect in Ancient Greek (to judge by the
presocratics). The root, 'id-', means 'individual', or 'private' (as in "Private
Tommy Atkins"). Hence idiosyncrasy. The Greeks lacked for an antonym of
'idiosyncrasy'. As a result, the word is misused today. It should be applied to
systems of beliefs held by ONLY ONE INDIVIDUAL. Of course, not such exist!
Thus, a claim by Palma may be deemed by Geary to resemble him and asked to be
taken back. There are other examples.
It's very difficult having an idiosyncrasy which is TRULY idiosyncratic.
There's more about 'idiot' in the Third Volume of "Critique of Practical
Reason" by Kant. (He distinguishes, in German, between 'Idiote' and "Stupide",
which he refers to his favoured noumenal/phenomenal distinction).
