I would suggest there is a peculiar insularity of the americans, at
times endearing, at times laughable.
For instance I find it to be laughable and serious that the country is
insulated by oceans, hence they go to war for all sorts of reasons in
places wher ethey
understand nothing, nothing even fo what 'victory' would be
but that is another story- now the fight is with a virus and I fear the
american Behemoth of aircraft carriers and nuclear boomers has very little
to shoot....

People refer to “America” and “Americans” as if it were some small
place, or in any way an “United” set of states. There is much bilingual
education here, but there is also American Exceptionalism. I agree with
you very few of my students arrive in college with much understanding of
foreign countries, foreign languages, the past…it’s quite a list. And what
they are sure of—that an essay must have five paragraphs and a thesis
statement—needs expansion. Among the best things you can do for an
American college student is put her on a plane. Well that was true before
the fine mess we’re now in Ollie.
