[lit-ideas] The English Channel: A Misnomer?

Where _exactly_ is _la Manche_? In Spanish, they speak of 'El canal de la  
Mancha', but I don't think that's the 'Mancha' from where Don Quixote  hailed? 
 
The English call it 'The English Channel', but surely that's political,  too?
 
I wonder if in Norman (Plantagenet) England, it was known as  "Manche"?
