I haven't been impressed with any of the modern Superman, Batman, Shadow, Phantom, Daredevil or Spiderman movies.

Welcome to Hollywood blockbusters.

- The actors are too young for their roles. But the target demographic (otherwise known as "the paying audience") is teenage boys, so the actors are young.

- Too much special effects, incl. meaningless explosions and meaningless violence. Why? See above, "target demographic."

- No meaningful plot. Why? See above, "target demographic."

- Lack of character development, incl. lack of character at all. Why? See above, "target demographic."

- Female characters are just babes in bikinis. Why? See above, "target
demographic."

- Major movies are now just "the movie of the comic book". Why? See above, "target demographic."

Lawrence, Hollywood movies aren't made with you in mind. Actually, none of us on this list, not even Erin. Hollywood movies, esp. the summer blockbuster, are designed by the studio accountants. They are investing $260m and they want to recover their investment. Thus they strip out every item that annoys or confuses that "target demographic", i.e., teenage boys. The result is a movie that a 16-year old boy will watch. Action and sex.

This isn't a Leftist plot to undermine "The American Way". Hollywood producers are ultra capitalists: "The Buck Stops Here. In My Pocket!" They want to maximize their investment, so they deliver what the market wants. Precisely like McDonalds hamburgers: the most bland food on the market.

Movies are going to get worse. The core movie-attending crowd (teenage boys) continues to drift away from movies. They prefer video games and web porn (see above: "action and sex"). Despite hundreds of millions of dollars in special effects, movie attendance slides down every year.

Soon, very soon, movies will be simultaneously released both in theaters, DVD, and pay-per-view. That'll be the end of movie theaters.
