sometimes when the new yorker comes
i envy eric yost
living in that city where
so many ads happen

take the current issue
in which a lady's oranges
like nell gywnn's
spill out
and fall to the ground

what chance in the world accounts for
the fact that the model looks about as gorgeous as a still life apple
some grapes or a succulent piece of game

and she comes totally ringless

a doll not
married to some champ of chimps who bruises people
and spots his own die
like the wise guy in damon runyon
big julie

if i lived there
i'm pretty sure i'd
be home by now

or at least
very much
enjoying second base
