"His stories are best when they just jiggle along. When he tries to stop and infuse them with meaning...they falter." New Yorker, Briefly Noted, Oct 3, 2005.

in Harold Wilson's day
Mrs. Jasper said ought to avoid contractions
aren't can't won't
much too casual
not quite the thing
oh I can still hear her,
"noht qvite de ting"
lovely accent
she was from India
and very particular

I had Mrs. Hodgson
in Sunday School and in the music room
she said music could impress you
transport to wild places
so it was better to start calm and concentrate
as bad as running with scissors this risk
of doing things while listening

I concentrated
and then I camped
and stuff
and now here I am
grown-up
with influenced views

the youth
who now elbow their way through
to part time jobs
agree in clusters at conferences
about privileging almost everything except themselves
they challenge the Jasper-Hodgson axis
but on most issues they are softer than those two were

for all they claim to care less
they hold that watching t.v. reveals the masses
and so they find me
guilty
of knowing nada about Oprah

last year
they wanted to serve Pabst at parties
for that unpretentious touch
this was almost too much
