Teemu: There is to my knowledge no general rule on how words adapted from other language should be spelled.

Eric: Omar explained that Serbian is phonetic. "Chauvinism" seemed a special case that would resist transliteration because it is based on a proper name. For example, if you said someone was a "Pangloss," after the character in _Candide_, you would expect it to be "Pangloss" in other languages that use the Latin alphabet. Serbian probably employs a hybrid alphabet and so transliterates.
