When in my early thirties, I learned that a high school friend, a military
officer, a good friend, had died suddenly and unexpectedly. Couldn't get to
his funeral in time and have since avoided his grave, but he often comes to
mind when people discourse about age or death. Dead at 32.
Yet an aunt lived to 105, At 99, she fell down cellar stairs and broke her
arm. She had gone down to do laundry, so though injured (Why waste the trip?)
she did her laundry, went upstairs and called a friend to take her to an ER.
Recovered in about three months.
Sure we're all rapidly aging mammals, but why not be summer ospreys, spring
peacocks, or autumn pigeons? Why not be a winter baby or a spring Arhat?
Once it seemed "too soon old, too late smart" was tragic wisdom. Now I don't
believe in tragedy, though sorrow is everywhere in view if one looks for it.
Re: Joyce and Finnegans Wake. In the "Shem the Penman" section, I constantly
notice hints that Shem is Yeats, that Joyce thinks Yeats's mysticism is a
dodge for irresponsible living, or at least HCE does. ("lowness...any visible
dogs quantity of it, etc. ) Anybody get that?
