I’m not sure what is meant by this term, but a few moments ago (06:00 PST) my
dogs were just coming up stairs from a potty run, when a female voice behind me
said, “I have found several locations for a party near you.” I whirled around,
getting a mild jolt of adrenaline in the process, to find that it was my smart
phone talking to me. If it were really smart it would know I am an
85-year-old fellow who isn’t at all interested in parties. Maybe the
invitation to party was “social functionality” in a smart phone sort of sense.
I set the phone face down on my desk hoping it would shut up.

Dear all,
It's quite possible that the discipline of psychology cannot do without some
sense of functionalism. In the social sciences this notion is more disputed. To
engineers, and to ideology *per se* functionalism is unquestionably true (what
a previous [Phil-Lit] poster would refer to as a "no-brainer").
In our current global climate it is striking how governments wilfully
disconnects certain key social functions. You can no longer go to the
hairdresser, take a public bath, get a fix for your nails, and so on. In this
particular sense society's functionality is reduced.
Is this a no-brainer? We're not sure. Is there not a perspective from whence
the present organisation of our lives is *more* beneficial than it was in it's
previous iteration? What power wants is to be praised. Oh, how great power is
at providing us with safety in these most dangerous of times!
