According to the NYT, Hamas was holding a rally, and being Hamas, brought a lot of ordinance and weapons to their love fest. Someone from Hamas screwed up, dropped a shell from a truck, set off their own weapons, causing a devastating chain-explosion.

Rather than admit they were clumsy screw-ups--as the Palestinian Authority investigation showed--Hamas tried to save face by blaming Israel for the blast, and started lobbing rockets at Israel.

So the Hamas solution here is to start a cycle of killings rather than take responsibility for their own inept handling of ordinance. More Middle East hillbilly stuff.

The chain of events began Friday afternoon, with an explosion at a Hamas rally in Gaza's crowded Jebaliya refugee camp, that killed 20 Palestinians, four of them 16 years old and under.

Hamas blamed Israel for that blast, and said its rocket attacks were retaliation.

Israel denied involvement. Abbas said Sunday an investigation by the Palestinian Authority determined the blast was caused by a shell dropping out of a vehicle laden with weapons.
