Paul's the smart one. His nose is to be trusted. I just like the notion of a "science" being a branch of aesthetics.

John: But why was the more elegant solution preferred?

Good point. Shakespeare uses a lot of astrological references. In his day, it worked quite well as a theory of personality. Kuhn's surmise came from his trying to understand why Aristotle's physics was so "wrong" about everything. Then he realized Aristotle's terms did not have the same meaning they had for moderns.

I suppose one answer to John's question is what the term "elegance" means to those who use it in the disciplines they pursue. "An elegant chess combination and an elegant musical performance walk into a bar ..."
