[lit-ideas] "SYMBOLO" (c) J. L. Austin -- (Was: Philosophy of Mathematics, Oxford Style

Grice recollects that Austin invented a game to entertain Quine (the
mathematical logician). Austin called it "SYMBOLO" and Grice says it was a
forerunner of W'ff 'n' Proff -- a boring game if you ask me, but I've seen more
 boring
ones.

Mrs Grice recollects that for at least two terms, all that Grice and
'friends' (incl. Austin) seemed to be doing -- at those Saturday morning
meetings,
mostly at St. John's, where, G. J. Warnock recalls, "we all looked as big
business types" -- it was St. John's then new conference room--: only thing
they
seemed to be doing was: writing crosses and dots on bits of paper.

That must have been the philosophy of mathematics for them.

Grice reports Austin preparing for Quine's visit. "He says that Mathematics
is a game -- so let's play it"

Cheers,

JL
