Adriano notes the 'far more disturbing' experiment conducted by Philip
Zimbardo, at Stanford in the early 1970s. It involved designating a
group of students as prisoners and another as guards. The prisoners
lived in conditions as near to that of a real (US) prison as possible;
the guards were to 'discipline' them, etc. The experiment, which was
to have run for two weeks,' was stopped after five or six days
because of the stress and other psychic damage it brought about in
both prisoners and guards.

Here's a website with a very good, illustrated account of it.
