What is 'music', anyway?

"Is this music, yes or no? If I am answered in the affirmative,
I would say ... that it does not belong at all to the art which I
am in the habit of considering as music."

No - not a question about 'hip-hop', 'rock & roll', 'jazz', '20th
century
avant-garde', '12-tone', etc., etc., but a comment written in 1857
about

Beethoven's Fifth Symphony

(which in 1857 was already half a century old).

[Quotation taken from _The Musical Companion_,
A.L. Bacharach & J.R. Pierce, eds., Victor Gallancz, Ltd, 1977]

Chris Bruce
for whom music
(especially Beethoven)
is a form of 'religion', in
Kiel, Germany
