Sendak's PIERRE is also a very good introduction for 6 year olds to Heidegger's concepts of "being unto death" and "sorgen" (concern).

Where the Wild Things Are was one of my childrens' favourite bedtime stories -- and one of my favourite to read. He did so many other wonderful things, too. His talent will be missed.
