It’s been a while since we’ve had a go at a tough question, so here’s one.
From today’s New York Times I learned that the soccer match between Boca
Juniors and River Plate, a match that was postponed due to violence, will be
played in Spain at Real Madrid’s San Bernabeu stadium. Deep into the story I
found the following by Alejandro Dominguez, president of Conmebol, South
American soccer’s governing body, “…all proceeds from the game [will] be
donated to a fund to ‘eradicate violence from Argentine soccer.’”
Skipping past what is meant by “all proceeds,” we come to the question. If you
had access to the funds and were given the instruction to eradicate violence
from Argentine soccer, how would you spend the cash? Perhaps I should add,
because I like humor, that I’m serious in this instance. I think I know a
little about how fan violence was reduced in Britain, but I don’t know the
whole story. As for this problem, I wouldn’t know where to begin. My guess is
that a P.R. company will be asked to come up with a slogan, “Kick violence out
of our beautiful game.” Something like that.
