I don't know about Putnam, but...

Popper's _Logik der Forschung_ was translated as _The Logic of Scientific
Discovery_ [...].
And if you (I'm using 'you' generically) wonder where he got the
'scientific' from, we must remember that Popper's original bore a subtitle:
Zur Erkenntnistheorie der modernen Naturwissenschaft
i.e. on the theory of knowledge of modern natural science.
Popper notes that J. and D. Freed 'assisted' him in the translation of his
1934 essay.
The 1934 had come out as Vol. 9 in the series, "Writings on the Scientific
Worldview", or, strictly, "Schriften zur der wissenschaftlichen
Weltauffassung", ed. by F. Franck and M. Schlick.
So in the original Austrian we have 'scientific' used twice:
-- in the subtitle of Popper's work: it's "on the epistemology of modern
natural SCIENCE", and
-- it's vol. 9 of a series of writings of the "SCIENTIFIC" worldview.
Austin would have loved to translate it. He knew German very well, and had
already translated Frege's "Die Grundlagen der Arithmetik: eine
logisch-mathematische Untersuchung über den Begriff der Zahl" (The foundations
of
arithmetic: A Logico-Mathematical Enquiry into the Concept of Number).
But instead he decided to translate Chomsky!
Grice, incidentally, he would say, was never "quite friends with Austin.
Very private man, Austin."
In any case, Austin died on Feb. 8, 1960, by which time, Popper -- with the
assistance of the Freeds, had already turned his "Die Logik der Forschung:
Zur Erkenntnistheorie der modernen Naturwissenschaft, vol. 9 "Schriften
zur der wissenschaftlichen Weltauffassung"" as _simpliciter_ "The logic of
scientific discovery".

Julius Freed rings perhaps more bells than Lan Freed. That is because of
"Orange Julius", the well-knwon chain of fruit drink beverage stores. The
beverage, for the ignoramus, is a rfather tasty mixture of ice, orange juice,
sweetener, milk, powdered egg whites and vanilla flavouring. It grew out
of an orange juice stand opened in Los Angeles by none other than Julius
Freed.
In Putnam's causal theory of naming, "Julius Freed" refers to... [add
aptest definite description that identifies the denotatum].
