Regarding US help, credit where credit is due. It is sensible to expect that right now there is major shortage of air lift capacity, especially helicopters, and luckily USN and USAF have considerably capacity in the area. The Pacific Command did provide P-3 Orions (observation planes, the kind that Chinese captures some time earlier) to be used in search and rescue, and USAF is providing C-130s (aka Hercules, a cargo plane) to be used for transport. USN also has at least one carrier and other ships on the way. See http://www.pentagon.mil/news/Dec2004/n12292004_2004122904.html (Yes the source is basicly a PR wire, but I have no reason to doubt the facts presented.) Glad to see millitary being put to good use. Other defence forces have helped too, Pakistan Navy in Maldives for example.
