Some time ago, Robert Paul contributed the following quote: "Conceptual relativism is a heady and exotic doctrine, or would be if we could make good sense of it. The trouble is, as so often in philosophy, it is hard to improve intelligibility while retaining the excitement. At any rate that is what I shall argue." —Donald Davidson, 'On the very idea of a conceptual scheme,' 1973. I am grateful to Robert for bringing attention to this article. There are a handful of texts that continue to influence my thinking long after I first read them, and this article is one. It isn't an easy read yet provided a flash of understanding for me that still lingers. What I find curious is that when I sit down to list the texts that have been most influential for me, I can't think of them. It's as though their importance lies in their operating at a subconscious level. I appreciate, then, when an occasion prompts me to remember those texts that are important to me.
