After the funeral, we had dinner this evening with a friend who escaped the
Chinese Civil War and, less some family members, and bereft, managed to
make a life for herself in Hong Kong. Eventually she succeeded in making a
version of the good life. Her daughter went to Stamford, became a professor
of E.R. medicine, married a neurosurgeon, cooks well.

I asked the elder lady whom she had voted for. She replied, in her English,
"I vote for John Kerry, because that Bush lie."
"About what?" I asked.
"About Iraq," she answered. And she continued, "But I knew John Kerry would
lose when I ask cleaning lady how she vote. She vote for George Bush. I
know John Kerry will lose when cleaning lady will vote for George Bush."

There it is.
