A.A. Let the non-philosopher give this a try.  If we don't have a
foundation on which to rest our desires for government, then we will have
micromanaged ourselves to death.  The Constitution has been as successful
as it has been precisely because it is based on philosophy that concerns
itself with man's role in government and government's obligation to man. 
We were fortunate, even blessed, to have had the framers that we had, who
carried out of the Enlightenment an intuitive sense of the spirituality, as
it were, of government.  

I agree too with Mike that mankind without society is not how life on earth
is lived.  Like it or not, we are herd animals.
