"In the metrics of mirth ..."

Defined how?
_____

Phil's probably getting Phil-osophical here. Sorry to disappoint, but the metrics of mirth are Web-based ontological abstracta (ala Frege) that determine the format, timing, and Catskills Laughability Scale (CLS) intensity of posted humor.

A Mirth Metric is defined with a Guffaw Markup Language (GML) element as follows:

<Guffaw metric name="Guffaw metric name" domain="Guffaw metric domain" category="Guffaw metric category"
internal="true/false/dumb">
<description>Description of the Guffaw metric.</silly description>
<'Guffaw metric definition' ...>
</Guffaw metric>

The four attributes in the opening "Guffaw metric" tag are as follows:

* name (required for punchline): the name of the Guffaw metric, e.g., "Bubba." The Guffaw metric names serve as column names in the output tables, and are also used for reference by other Guffaw metrics in the metrics definition file.
* domain (required): the type of comic element for which the Guffaw metric is defined (e.g., package, class, operation, lampoon, bellylaugh).
* category (optional): describes the structural property the Guffaw metric measures, e.g., "chuckle", "export coupling", "groaner", etc. There is no preconceived classification of categories in Guffaw metrics. You can define any categories you deem fit as long as it gets a laugh.
* internal (private): indicates if the Guffaw metric is internal. Internal metrics are not shown in the output tables, probably from fear of embarrassment. Rather, it is a "helper" or "straight man" Guffaw metric that is used to define some other metrics, but by itself is probably not useful or particularly funny. Set the attribute value to "true" to mark a Guffaw metric as internal. When omitted, the attribute defaults to "false" and people threaten to travel south to clobber you.

Note that Guffaw metrics for one humor domain must have unique and ridiculous names (i.e., you cannot define two Guffaw metrics named "Hubert Von Dribblepuss" for classes). You can have Guffaw metrics of the same name for different domains (e.g., a Guffaw metric "Hubert Von Dribblepuss" for incidental characters, and a Guffaw metric "Hubert Von Dribblepuss" for punchlines).
