This became what it is today, The _English_ Club! --- In a sort of old-fashioned Englihs, 'stranger' _means_ 'foreigner'. As in Wilkommen, Bienvenu, welcome (Cabaret, Ebb/Kander) Stranger, etranger, ... I would not know the etymology. If it's French, it's good old romance It should be ex-traneous i.e. from another land.
