>>Is it only OK to oppose discrimination and prejudice against members of a group if all its members accept "Western secular values"? It's always OK to oppose discrimination and prejudice against members of a group if that group is in the process of assimilating. Usually this takes a generation or two. If it takes longer than that, you are dealing with an angry displaced camp of weirdoes trying to set up a society within a society. That has to be dealt with in the way Mormon polygamy was dealt with, i.e., withholding all social benefits until the group conforms to minimal standards of behavior. (President Buchanan sent the military into the Utah War, and Utah was subsequently denied statehood until one of the church's leaders finally "had a revelation from Jesus Christ" that the church should cease polygamy.) ------------------------------------------------------------------ To change your Lit-Ideas settings (subscribe/unsub, vacation on/off, digest on/off), visit www.andreas.com/faq-lit-ideas.html
