Mohammed founded both a major world religion and a major empire. He is the only person in world history who has done such a thing.

Mohammed is a clearly identifiable historical person, with many references to him from contemporary persons. His military campaigns, legal decisions, etc. are well-known.

His only other competitors as founders of world religions are Buddha, Confucius, and Jesus. I'm not sure whether Abraham actually existed, or he is an entirely mythical figure, or whether he is a blend of actual person and mythical. Jesus is quasi-mythical; there was a person named Immanuel, but significant aspects of his life (sacrifice and resurrection, etc.) are clearly taken from ancient (5,000 BC) Babylonian myths. There is more evidence and details of the lives of Buddha and Confucius.

As for major empires, there are a number of founders of global empires. How many of these empires lasted at least 1,000 years?

yrs,
andreas
