Curiously, the original may not be close to the
original. Brazilian friends who've encountered
Coelho in the original Brazilian Portuguese regard
him as a trash writer. I write this bluntly, not
to denigrate your reading list, but to show how
much depends upon translation, and to show how a
writer may be regarded as a stooge at home, yet
seen as a luminary abroad.
