There is something Griceian about Milne – and by Milne I mean Milne (A. A.),
Milne (Dorothy Milne) and Milne (C. R.) – “A. A. and all the Milnes”.
Many Griceianisms can be drawn from “Goodbye, Christopher Robin.”
And then there is this quote by Milne which, while not strictly Griceian, seems
to sound anti-Popperian on the face of it:
“Life is a journey to be experienced, not a problem to be solved.”
I’m not sure Grice would agree with the metaphor, “Life is a journey to
experienced,” although, to echo L. Helm (re: ‘lead ocean’) it makes for a good
figure. But I wonder if Popper would say that life is, literally, a problem to
be solved. McEvoy seems to use the phrase ‘problem-solving’ as applied to
Popperianism quite often, and he might know (or not of course).
Cheers,
