Well, even so, the theory will have to account for, or do something, with
the counter-example of sub-Saharan Africans, unless it is going to be
thought circular. Despite apparently limited previous contacts with the
Europeans, the sub-Saharan Africans proved to be much more resistant to
European diseases than the native Americans, which was (unfortunately) one
of the main reasons that they were deemed suitable to be used as slave
workforce in the Americas, the Caribbean, the Haiti and so on. ( If 90 % of
them had been dying of European diseases, slave trade wouldn't have been
very profitable.) Was sub-Saharan Africa in the 16. -18. centuries much
more urban than we tend to think ? I suppose that is possible, but it would
be good to see some evidence for that.

It might also be relevant that the poor resistance of the Europeans to
African diseases is thought to be one of the reasons that Africa was not
colonized by them until the 19. century. (I am not sure who talks about
this, but it might be Niall Ferguson.)
