Otherwise, as self-appointed spokesman here, I would venture that the US feels intense solidarity with the EU for cultural reasons. And as the EU and USA move apart for economic and geopolitical reasons, there is a feeling of nostalgia and post-bellum resentment.

They are also moving apart for cultural reasons. The EU take on the late cartoon controversy is just the latest sharp evidence of the growing cultural distance between the US & Europe. Just before that comes the religious vs secular worldview divide. Lawrence Helms' Islamists may not "get" a lot about the US, but the EU doesn't "get" a whole lot about it, either.
